Board Games We Grew Up With

(Oh wait, let me correct that…It should be “Board Games I Grew OLD With” for I never really went beyond the five-foot mark. :D)

Of the many presents we exchanged amongst us last Christmas, one gift stood out and brought a deluge of memories. My sister gave our eldest and her husband a classic Monopoly board game. It wasn’t the ordinary set you’d find in the stores nowadays. It came with a wooden case, wooden houses and hotels, AND the classic metal tokens!

We all fondly recalled the hours we spent playing Monopoly and other board games. Scrabble, Sorry, Snakes and Ladders, Games of the General, Chinese Checkers, Chess, the list goes on and on. These board games saved us from boredom when we were not allowed to watch television and had nothing else left to do. In fact we also loved a good quiz, this is something we would always look forward to and something that pubs have been doing for years. These days you can even get a bar trivia quiz, and you can find your own quizzes online tailored to your IQ, isn’t that great!

Add to that sets of Word Factory, Boggle, and Bingo. Yup, Bingo! I don’t remember who exactly taught us how to play bingo but we did have fun playing it even if there was no prize at stake.

Nowadays though, so many people play Bingo games in casinos worldwide. And the craze for this game has taken over the Internet, too. Many online platforms offer players a chance to play from the comfort of their home, while also being able to take away abundant cash rewards. No wonder, then, that a lot of people get into online casinos hoping for some big wins and lots of entertainment!

Back in the day, our parents really made sure that we had games that not only strengthened our bond but also sharpened our intellect. It also helped that they were free to do the chores or to have a bit of rest while my sisters and I were preoccupied with whatever board game we were playing. When we were younger we also had board games that we could play on our own, which I also loved! I recently came across a list of the best solo board games of 2018. I am definitely going to be buying some of these games, I can’t wait to bring back all those memories I have from sitting in my bedroom listening to the rain, keeping myself entertained.

Nowadays, online versions of these games can easily be accessed with just a few clicks. You can play Scrabble, Chess, Boggle, and bingo online games with people from across the globe. Of course, nothing beats playing with your siblings and friends with the real thing but playing online and meeting new friends in the process can be fun too. Just don’t get too hooked on them though.

  1. I agree! Nothing beats playing with people whom you can actually touch. I just remember charades and pictionary from my childhood. Oh and monopoly.

    • Just realized how weird it’ll be to play charades and pictionary online. LOL! Board games played traditionally really do make for great family bonding moments don’t they?

  2. board games are fun! we always play too! 😀
