Our First Week in Preschool

We’re in Preschool!!!

After trying independent homeschooling for a year, we have decided to try conventional schooling this year to see which one would work best for the children.  Though both kids have shown great progress in academics during our homeschooling year, my little girl has a bit of trouble socializing with other people.  Although very articulate at home, she clams up when with other people.  Hence, our decision to expose her to kids her age and to other adults (her teachers) as well – so, Preschool, here we are!

Here’s our first day in a glance:

We were not really surprised when Jade refused to let go of my hand and had to be accompanied inside the classroom.  Although we were fervently hoping that she would bravely go to the classroom alone since she was so excited to go to school.  Good thing she let go of Mama’s hand soon and I didn’t have to stay inside the classroom the entire three hours.

Jakei’s class starts an hour later than his sister’s class so he has to stay in the waiting area with me for a full hour.  On the first day of school, there was only the Little Tykes house pictured above and a ride-on car to play with so he was pretty much bored already after just a few minutes.  When Teacher Abby called them to line up for class, our little boy just kissed us (hubby was there too), took his lunch bag, and went to line up all by himself.  It seems he’s really ready for school now.

It was pretty much the same way the rest of the week.  Jade had to be accompanied to the classroom while Jakei would fall in line without Mama to hold his hand.  Yesterday, he almost forgot to give me a kiss coz he was too excited to go inside.  Oh, and since he got so bored waiting for an hour on the first day of school, we’ve been bringing crayons, workbooks, AND plenty of snacks to keep him occupied while waiting for class.

During the first week of school, Jade always came home with stars in her hands and her teachers say that she works well in class.  Hopefully, she would be brave enough to go inside the classroom all by herself on our second week of school.

  1. My daughter just started schooling too. It’s exciting cos I am seeing her learn already! 🙂

    • I know! So exciting, right? But I can’t help feeling lonely when they’re both in school. I’ve gotten so used to having them with me always. I think I’m the one with separation anxiety.

  2. My daughter is in kindergarten anyway good luck to your kiddos =)

  3. OH my little daughter is in kinder garten too… so more or less we got the same experiences too…

  4. My daughter started pre-school last week too. Because of the trial summer classes, she felt comfortable right away being left inside the classroom by herself on the first day. Still, I stayed the whole time in the waiting area since I took the day off for it. Mommy was the one excited and I wanted to see her participation and interaction in class.

  5. excited mommy and babies.. I’ll be on the same shoes 2 years from now..:)

  6. I don’t have a kid yet (but planning to get married soon) …anyway .. As early as now I’m deciding on how to educate my future kids. I am attracted to the concept of homeschooling but I always seem to come across a blog/mom who decided to send their kids to traditional school after a few years of home schooling? Does it not work??

  7. I’m sure your little girl will be brave enough soon.. 🙂 Props to Jakei for being so brave and excited for class! ^^

  8. Shy pa talaga si Ate Jade, pero si Jakei mukhang excited na talaga for school. Hindi pa nila suot uniform nila?

  9. i think sa homeschooling, socialization talaga ang mawawala; good thing that you tried conventional schooling…

  10. How brave Jakei is! I’m sure your little girl will be excited once she have friends in school.

  11. there are pros and cons with homeschooling. sometimes over exposure to other people can also be harmful to the kids. *sigh* maybe lang namn. If i have my own kid, i’ll decide by then. nice post.

  12. i am glad that the kids are adjusting well..

  13. Wow! He is such a brave boy…As for your little lady, maybe it will only took a couple of days for her adjustment and I am sure she will love it too.

  14. Very cute kids of you. Schooling is very exciting when your kids starts to learn. Parents are still the best teachers.

  15. my daughter started kindergarten as well, and getting lots of stars. 🙂
your little boy is brave, don’t worry your little girl get acquainted to her new school routine. 🙂

  16. i remember my kids when they got into the pre-school (they went at the same time although my daughter was only 2 who looked like 3). Kuya was the one who doesn’t want to be left alone while little girl doesn’t care. It took months before kuya was able to let go. he can be left inside the room but he must know that his lolo was just outside. 🙂

  17. My baby girl’s in kinder, too. I also hope she’d be brave enough to enter her class without me. It has almost been a month, and yet, she still wants me beside her in class sometimes. It pains me to leave her in tears, but I couldn’t stay.

  18. The little girl would benefit a lot from this new schooling experience as she’ll be able to enhance her social skills. I guess the little boy is already well-adjusted. 🙂
