One View, One Pledge, One Million Clean Toilets

This video should serve as a wake-up call for most of us. The little things we take for granted, like having a clean toilet, could mean the world to others and could definitely help save lives,”

– Dennis Chua, Domex Brand Manager –

How many Youtube videos do you watch every day? Here’s one that you absolutely MUST watch.  Every unique view this video gets, counts as a pledge. And for every pledge received, P5 will be donated by Domex to UNICEF’s sanitation program which aims to improve access to basic sanitation in deprived areas around the world.

1 unique view = 1 pledge = P5 donation

That means that just by taking a few minutes to view the video below you are already helping less privileged communities gain access to clean toilet facilities.  Encourage your family and friends to watch the video as well. Join the Domex One Million Clean Toilets Movement and help save lives together.

Community welcomes arrival of clean toilets in “Fiesta” video

It’s a scene typically played out during fiestas: People rushing to the streets, drawn to the sound of a marching band. Everyone is smiling, eager to see the “star” of the celebration. But instead of showing the face of a movie celebrity, a beauty queen or a politician, the video reveals an unlikely, yet welcome sight—a new, clean toilet facility.

Aptly titled “Fiesta”, the Domex video, produced by Unilever Philippines, is available on Youtube and shows how underprivileged Filipinos welcome the “arrival” of clean toilet facilities in their communities. “The video aims to make people realize the value of a toilet which most of us, unfortunately, take for granted,” said Dennis Chua, Domex Brand Manager.

The “Fiesta” video contributes to the efforts of Domex’s One Million Clean Toilets Movement. Each unique view translates into a pledge for the advocacy campaign which collects pledges from households to conscientiously maintain their own hygienic bathrooms. For every pledge received, Domex will donate P5 to UNICEF’s sanitation program, towards improving access to basic sanitation in deprived areas around the world, including the Philippines.

“By watching the ‘Fiesta’ video and asking our friends to watch it, we are not only raising awareness for toilet appreciation and sanitation, more importantly, we are helping less privileged communities gain access to clean toilet facilities,” said Benjie Yap, Unilever Foods and Home Care Vice President.

Clean toilets, germ-free communities

All over the country, people are welcoming the construction of new toilet facilities and the repair of dilapidated ones, since becoming aware of its role in disease prevention, especially among children.

According to the Department of Health, of the estimated 3,420 diarrhea-related deaths among Filipino children under 5 every year, around 2,000 could have been prevented by access to safe water, improved toilet sanitation and personal hygiene.

This video should serve as a wake-up call for most of us. The little things we take for granted, like having a clean toilet, could mean the world to others and could definitely help save lives,” Chua said.

It’s Delightful-E Simple To Share!

As Electrolux makes it simple for us to save through their energy efficient appliances, Electrolux also makes it just as simple for us to share our blessings through their Delightful-E Simple To Share campaign.  Just donate your old clothes to any of their drop-off sites (see list below).  They will launder all of them before segregating those that are still in good condition and those that are not.

 photo Delightful-ESimpletoSharebanner_930x330px.jpg

Those that are in good condition will be donated to calamity stricken survivors while those that can no longer be worn will be upcycled into quilts.  Clothes that are no longer in good condition will be sent to Gawad Kalinga’s Trese where they will be transformed into quilts which will then be donated to orphanages and other communities.

This means that every single piece of clothing you donate will be put to good use and will bless other people in need.

Another part of Electrolux’s Simple To Share campaign gives you a chance to win one of four Electrolux twin tub washing machines.

Share a little bit of yourself by donating a special piece of clothing.  It could be that favorite shirt that you haven’t worn since 10 pounds ago or maybe that pair of slacks that you wore on your first day of work.  If you haven’t worn it for decades, why not make someone extra happy by donating it?   Tell Electrolux over at Instagram about that special piece of clothing – why it’s close to your heart and why you’ve decided to donate it – and you just might win a washing machine and Breeze gift packs.

Mechanics for the Simple To Share Instagram/Twitter Contest

  1. Take a photo of a special piece of clothing that you are willing to donate.
  2. Tell us why it’s special to you and why you wish to donate it.
  3. Use the hashtags #DelightfulE and #SimpleToShare  and tag @ElectroluxPH

The Electrolux Delightful-E Simple Instagram Contest ends on September 30 so SEND your entries now!

  • enjoy a weekend in a Tagaytay hotel or a Subic beach resort

  • pay 2 months worth of monthly tuition installments

I could think of a dozen more things I can do with 10,000 pesos! Here’s what else I could do with those savings:

Saving Every Cent

The 10K savings I mentioned above is just from laundry expenses. Imagine how much more I could save by cutting down on other expenses! The bulk of our monthly expenses goes to food, transportation, and electricity. Though they all are necessities, we can still cut back on them. As an example, replacing your ceiling fans with wall mounted fans might help reduce electricity bills by a certain amount as they consume less energy. Small changes add up to big differences!

Save on Food

One of the ways we’ve cut down on food expenses is eating out less often. That also includes dialing 8-7000 or 8-6236 less often. I’ve also been buying meat, produce, and fruits from the wet market instead of the supermarket. They’re not only much cheaper, they’re also much fresher.

Save on Electricity

You can start saving on electricity by looking at affordable electricity plans. Search for electricity plans and listings of your area, then select accordingly. Another way to lower electric bills is to make sure that all your appliances are running in good condition. Some may think it frugal to keep an appliance for as long as it’s working but if you’ve been using it for more than a decade it won’t be running efficiently anymore and is costing you more on electricity. When buying new appliances, make sure you choose ones that are energy-efficient. Look for the Energy Star logo, inverter drives, and eco-saving features.

Another way to lower energy consumption is to unplug appliances that are not in use. Before going to sleep, unplug televisions, microwave ovens, modem and wifi routers, and all other appliances you won’t be using for the night. You’d be surprised how much you’d end up saving in a year.

Save on Transportation

If you’re up to the challenge of riding the jeepney and LRTs, public transportation is still the cheapest way to get to your destination. It’s not that comfortable though and if you’re with little children, it can be quite dangerous (imagine having a little child in a cramped rush-hour MRT – he could get squished and suffocate!). One option to save on transportation costs is to carpool with co-workers. To lessen gas expenses, my husband sometimes uses his motorbike going to work. On days when he’s using the car, he uses apps like Waze to determine the route with the least traffic.

More Savings, More To Share

My grandfather once told me that it’s not greedy to want a comfortable life, to reap profit from a business, or to save as much as you can. By making sure that your basket is full, you would have more to share with those in need. Work hard, save for the future, and share your blessings.

RUSSELL HOBBS: Now at the Heart of the Filipino Home

I am in love with Russell Hobbs! Now hold your horses.  Before you go running to my husband and warning him of my infidelity, it isn’t what it seems.  🙂 Russell Hobbs is UK’s leading kitchen appliance brand, the first to introduce the coffee pot with an automatic keep warm feature, and the first to bring the automatic electric kettle to the world.  And I am in love with their Desire Collection!  The Desire collection truly lives up to its name – I am now dreaming of having this entire line.  Of course, I’m also dreaming of a kitchen that would do it justice.

Last May 6, a night of gustatory delight and music awaited us at the Makati Shangri-la on Tuesday night.  We were treated to a sumptuous dinner and fabulous music.  We also got to know more about the Russell Hobbs brand and saw firsthand their line of elegantly designed kitchen appliances.

 photo RHinvite.jpg

Clarence Cu, Sally Sidani, and Patrick Leow, presented the Kitchen, Desire, and Allure collections now available in the Philippines. Also at the event was Chef JP Anglo, esteemed endorser of Russell Hobbs Philippines.

We are excited to bring to the country one of UK’s leading brands of small kitchen appliances known for its timeless style and performance.  With this, we strongly believe that Russell Hobbs will be at the heart of Filipino homes from now on.

– Clarence Cu, president of Tocoms Philippines –

Young professionals who have just started to live independently and start-up families who are building a new life in their own homes now have a new partner in making their dreams come true.

As much as I love the entire Desire Collection with their matte black finish and vibrant red accents, its price is out of our range.  Fortunately, Russell Hobbs also has a line of products that’s right within our budget.  The Kitchen Collection is for moms like me who want high-quality products at affordable costs.  This collection comes in white gloss finish and green accents and is sure to make breakfast and food preparation a breeze.  Their uncomplicated designs make them very easy to use and would keep early morning rush a bit more relaxing.

The state-of-the-art Allure and Illumina collections, on the other hand, would make any modern home complete.  The brushed chrome finish and sleek 21st century design of the Allure collection makes them not only powerful functional tools in the kitchen but also stylish furnishings for a modern hub.   The unique color control light rings of the Illumina collection seem to transport one into the Jetson’s kitchen. Really awesome!  However, this line isn’t available here yet so you’ll still have to wait until April 2015 for its launch.

Among the products exhibited during the launch, the Purifry and the Griller and Panini Maker in One were what caught my interest.  The Purifry would be perfect for making “fried” meals for my hubby without using any oil at all.  It works like a turbo broiler only your food gets cooked faster and more efficiently.  The Griller and Panini Maker would be great for the snack store that we’d been planning to open (crossing my fingers it’d be REAL soon) here in our neighborhood.

Russell Hobbs has been a household name in UK for more than 60 years.  It was founded in Great Britain in 1952 by Bill Russell and Peter Hobbs.  They revolutionized the kettle market when they offered the first automatic electric kettle.  They are also the first to offer the market a coffee pot with an automatic keep warm feature.  Russell Hobbs is exclusively distributed in the Philippines by Tocoms Philippines. It is now available in leading appliance and department stores nationwide.
