Natural Household Cleaners from The Peaceful Housewife

The only ingredients needed are olive oil and lemon juice. Mix equal parts in a spray bottle – wait, spray bottle?! Yup, spray bottle! You see, these are ingredients to make your own furniture polish. Just spray the mixture lightly on your furniture, wipe with a clean cloth, and, viola, your furniture has revived its sheen! This should work on your furniture. Although, on saying that my friend tried this on her sofa after her child got her muddy feet all over it and it didn’t really make a difference. She then told me about this furniture steam cleaner that she found on the internet and apparently it has worked wonders for her sofa, as well as all of her other pieces of furniture. She showed me before and after pictures, and I have to say, it is very impressive. But seeing as my homemade furniture polish works for me, I’m going to continue using it until I can’t anymore.

A cup of white vinegar, a cup of water and a tablespoon of alcohol will also do wonders for your mirrors and windows. Mix vinegar, water and alcohol then place in a spray bottle. Spray on glass, wipe with a clean, lint-free cloth for clear mirrors and glass. Got no lint-free cloth? A wadded up newspaper will work well. There are plenty of natural products available if you’ve decided to adjust your lifestyle to a more eco-friendly one, doing away with abrasive chemicals and synthetic cleaning products.

On a budget and can’t afford those expensive fabric conditioners? A cup of hot water, a cup of baking soda, and 2 cups of vinegar mixed together with a few drops of fragrance oils would do the trick. Be careful mixing this one though or you might end up making a replica of Mt. Vesuvius instead. Mix baking soda and water in a container and add a few drops of fragrance oil. The fragrance oil may be omitted if you want it fragrance-free. Add the vinegar to the container VERY SLOWLY. Adding all of the vinegar in at the same time would create a reaction more apt in a science project than for kitchen use. Pour in a little bit at a time to give it plenty of time to react before pouring more in. Use about ¼- ½ cup of this mixture for each load.

These are just three of the many recipes for natural household cleaners from one of The Peaceful Housewife’s e-books. I’ve already tried the furniture polish and the glass cleaner mixture which both worked well for our dining table and for all our windows and mirrors. This weekend, we’ll be trying the fabric conditioner during our laundry day. I’ll let you know how that turns out.
