DIY: Children’s Toy Cabinet

Toys are accumulating faster than the kids are outgrowing them!  We’re already given away some toys but there are just some toys that the kids hang on to for dear life.  To clear the house of clutter yet still manage to keep the kids’ beloved toys, we’re thinking of building a toy cabinet for them.  Though there are plenty of ready-made toy cabinets available in department stores,  none of the ones we saw would fit nicely in our limited living space so we’re seriously thinking of utilizing our DIY skills. Mine are close to none actually so I’ll be needing those self drilling screws.

I’ve started reading about how to make toy cabinets and most of them seem quite easy to follow.  To start off, I need to measure the space where I’ll be placing the toy cabinet.  Then I’m supposed to figure out the measurement of each compartment in the cabinet.  The measurements would have to depend on the general size of the toys that we’ll be putting inside.  We’ll probably need two big compartments, a couple more medium size ones, and several small cubbies to properly organize their toys.  Hooks would also come in handy for toys that come in bags or baskets.

Next, I need to choose wood.  Cedar and pine were highly recommended because they can withstand wear and tear and are also quite easy to cut.   They are also both resistant to mold, mildew, and insects.  Just perfect for the little ones toy cabinet.  I would also have to choose hardware well.  Hinges and brackets must be sturdy and tamper proof screws are advisable.  I was told not to use hardware that’s made of plastic or aluminum and to opt for those made from anodized steel which are more sturdy.

After that, a little muscle work and craftsmanship are all I need to put the toy cabinet together.  If my DIY toy cabinet comes out fine, I just might let the kids put the finishing touches so they can have fun decorating their very own toy cabinet.
