When Acne Isn’t Acne

For the most part of the year, I’ve been battling with breakouts (and breakdowns) which I thought were due to hormonal imbalance (which I also thought were causing my emotional breakdowns :P) Last Sunday, I finally found time to see a dermatologist. This was something I was considering for a while now, but if it wasn’t for a friend of mine recommending I should take the steps by looking into sites such as columbiadermsc.com, I didn’t actually think this would happen. I’ve thought about it so much, but I’m glad I finally decided to take my skincare game even more seriously. Lo and behold, I found out that I’ve been using the wrong skin care products on my face! AND I also learned that the acne I thought I had was not acne at all! With this being said, if you do suffer from acne, if you choose to buy cbd oil online or make a change to your skincare routine in anyway, being consistent is key.

I really should have seen a dermatologist sooner and not experimented with just about all the skincare products I could afford. Apparently, my self-diagnosis was just a big misdiagnosis. It was already too late before I was told that you can actually consult an online dermatologist if you are unsure regarding the health of your skin. I now wish I had done something before it was too late, but here we are.

Since I thought I had hormonal acne, I bought a tea tree cleanser which can help control my breakouts. However, the doctor told me that tea tree oil was doing more damage than good on my skin (good thing I hadn’t had time to buy that new BB with tea tree oil I wanted to try). She told me that salicyclic acid wasn’t a friend to my skin and I should avoid products that contain it. It also turns out that I shouldn’t even be using moisturizers on my face. I was already producing more than enough sebum to keep it moisturized naturally. So what was causing the breakouts? Dermatitis.

‘Tis a Thing Called DERMATITIS

 photo dermadiagnosis.jpg

Perioral Dermatitis and Seborrheic Dermatitis to be exact. This caught me again in surprise as I’ve always associated seborrheic dermatitis with dandruff which I didn’t have – or so I thought. I didn’t have those white flaky stuff we usually associate with “dandruff”. Well, there’s another myth debunked!

Seborrheic Dermatitis isn’t just dandruff. It can occur not just on the scalp but on other parts of the body that tend to be oily such as creases of the nose, around the lips, behind the ears, outer ear, and the chest. Have you heard of cradle cap in infants? That’s seborrheic dermatitis too. Though she cannot pinpoint the exact triggers, it may be caused by stress, changes in the weather, excessive sebum production, or infrequent shampoos. The dermatologist said that this form of dermatitis is chronic (meaning I have it for life, huhuhuhu) but can be managed with proper skin care and healthy diet.

As for the other –itis, it resembles acne but it isn’t. Perioral dermatitis is characterized by acne-like bumps around the mouth, on the chin, in the folds around the nose, under the eyes, and on the forehead. It’s on the T-zone which is why I thought it was hormonal acne. According to the dermatologist my seborrheic dermatitis could be the man cause for this. It is also aggravated by toothpaste dripping on my chin. Yah, I’m a child like that – letting toothpaste froth drip down my chin while I’m brushing my teeth. 😛 My using heavy skin creams and sunscreen makes it even worse – which is why I’m staying away from moisturizers for now.

New Skin Care Regimen

 photo dermameds.jpg

For the next week, I’m on Tetralysal (lymecycline) and Hydrocortisone+Erythromycin cream. No more tea tree oil cleanser also. I’m back to using Cetaphil for keeps. Cetaphil and Physiogel are the only cleansers the dermatologist recommends. She also recommended that I change my shampoo to Head & Shoulders or Gard. I’m to also use a ketoconazole shampoo once a week. It has only been a couple of days since I’ve changed my regimen and followed the prescription yet my skin’s already visibly cleared a bit. Hopefully, all the redness will be gone before Saturday.

Are you having problems with your skin too? Please do see a dermatologist ASAP. You won’t want to waste your money on skin care products that aren’t really suited for your skin.

Bright Idea for A Quick Home Makeover

Want a quick home makeover without putting a hole in your pocket?  Consider installing cable lighting which is so versatile that it can be used to provide direct lighting, accent lighting, or even ambient lighting.  With light cables, you can create an infinite number of effects and change the mood of any room in a jiffy.  Installing it is also quite easy as you only need to mount parallel cables from wall to wall or ceiling to wall.

You can make installing light cables your DIY project this season, just read more about it before creating your layout plan and buying materials. You may need the help of an electrician if you’re not knowledgeable about wattages and power supply requirements.

Home Entertainment Must-Haves

Love having friends come over your place? Here are three things that you absolutely must-have for no-fail entertaining at home.

HD TV with HD Media Player. Just pop a couple of bags in the microwave and you’re all set for movie marathon night. For the best home entertainment experience, grab a few of those 3D glasses and install surround stereos.

Magic Sing. Here’s a space-saving alternative to the bulky karaoke. If you already have a great sound system and a clear tv, all you’ll need is to plug this in and you’ve got hours of singing fun that’ll sure to have everyone belting their favorite music. The best thing is, the microphone, song list, cables, and chips all conveniently fit in a small bag (just a little bigger than a clutch).

Portable Loudspeaker System. Musicians aren’t the only ones who would do well to have a portable speaker. Those who are often conducting seminars, hosting parties, or just fond of listening to music should invest in one. If you’re going fishing, on a boat or having a pool party, a waterproof portable radio is a great option if you’re looking for a way to bring your music wherever you are going. If you love throwing parties in your own home, a compact portable loudspeaker system would amp the cool music factor to your party. The mackie srm150 with its instrument-ready input and dedicated channel for CD, MP3, iPods to name a few is a good choice.

Electrolux + Trese: From Worn Out Clothes to Quilts

As weekend sales and bazaars usher the coming Christmas season, do consider clearing out your closets before starting your shopping spree.   What to do with your pre-loved clothes?  Well, DONATE them to Electrolux Clothes Donation Drive, of course! Why Electrolux?  Aside from Electrolux actively doing this advocacy for several years now…

  1. They’re the only ones that I know that actually launders (washes and inspects each piece of clothing) donated clothes before distributing them to those in need.
  2. Even worn-out clothes that were donated are put to good use.

Electrolux has partnered with Gawad Kalinga’s Trese to transform clothes that are not fit for wearing into quilts for children and new born babies in orphanages.

“Electrolux believes that there must be dignity in the clothes that we donate. To make sure that every piece of clothing is in good condition, we will sort out the worn out, unwearable ones, then upcycle them into quilts with the help of Trese”

That favorite shirt of yours that you’ve worn a hundred times until it was all frayed in the collar or until you became several sizes bigger? As long as the rest of the fabric is still in good condition, donate it.

That pair of jeans that has been lying at the bottom of your cabinet for the past couple of years – donate it.

Those dresses and shirts your little ones have outgrown – donate them.

Clothes were meant to be worn and not kept in eternal storage, so please do DONATE those you have not worn for years.  Be a part of this meaningful advocacy. Drop off your donations in any of these locations:

  • Electrolux Customer Service Hub (Grundfos Building, 5548 Osmena Highway, Brgy. San Isidro, Makati City)

Electrolux transforms worn out clothes into quilts with GawadKalinga’sTrese

Filipinos have relentlessly proven that the concept of bayanihan is still alive today. Every year the Philippines is devastated by numerous typhoons which result to ruined homes and ravaged livelihood. From one calamity to another, Filipinos have made it a tradition to donate and help rehabilitate the lives of the victims.

Sharing with this tradition, Electrolux, a global leader in home appliances, has been collecting and laundering clothes for calamity-stricken survivors for several years now. This year, Electrolux, through its Delightful-E Simple campaign, innovated this long-running advocacy.

Together with Gawad Kalinga’s Trese community, Electrolux will upcycle unusable clothes into quilts for children and new born babies in orphanages and other communities.

“Electrolux believes that there must be dignity in the clothes that we donate. To make sure that every piece of clothing is in good condition, we will sort out the worn out, unwearable ones, then upcycle them into quilts with the help of Trese” said Andrea Pionilla, Electrolux Marketing Manager. “With this partnership, we aim not only to give quilts to children and new born babies but also another source of livelihood for this Payatas community.”
